Oversize djembes are 14-16" across the top of the drum (not including tuning rings) and 24-26" tall. These are suitable for those requiring more surface area for hand movement, or to achieve a particular "big djembe" sound. Oversize djembes are typically heavier and more bulky than standard size djembes. More tension is required to tune the drum fully than a standard size djembe, so thicker skins are typically installed. The sound response is usually more wet, with more overtones and warmth. Oversize djembe drums can offer a great range of sounds, with full bass notes, strong tones, and because of the greater surface area, different kinds of slaps can be made.
