CABO-VERDE ISLANDS

Cabo Verde, formerly a Portuguese colony, is a country consisting of a small group of islands in the Atlantic, off the coast of West Africa (Senegal). It has a strong musical tradition and styles vary from one island to the next. The two most common styles are 'morna' and 'coladera'. The 'morna' is slow in rhythm and nostalgic in feeling, while the 'coladera', a dance, is influenced in its rhythms by the samba, cumbia etc.
